Encouraging our young members

The Royal Perth Yacht Club Youth Development Squad is designed to introduce, develop, and consolidate racing skills of our youth members (14 to 24 years old) in a challenging and supportive learning environment. The youth development squad was started by the Club in the early 90’s to encourage youth sailors to improve their fleet and match racing skills, to represent the Club at national and international events. Past Development Squad members have gone on to successfully represent RPYC at international events, with Team Mirsky (Torvar Mirsky) ranking within the top 5 on the international match racing circuit.

The current Development Squad training has practical and theoretical elements, with the Club BW8 keelboats utilised for practical training sessions. Our training is run by experienced coaches covering boat handling, sail trim, racing rules, tactics, and physical fitness. This focus is all underpinned by teamwork, perseverance and fun!

Theory and practical skills may be presented by various specialist instructors in their respective disciplines. Theory sessions will be conducted at the Club or other locations as required.

Timing

Training and racing will take place in the summer months in preparation for upcoming fleet and match racing regattas.
