Sailability introduction

Operating in conjunction with Royal Perth Yacht Club  Sailability WA offers all people the opportunity to sail regardless of their level of ability, skill, or personal circumstances. The programme is run by an operational committee, a co-ordinator, and a large group of safety trained volunteers interested in sharing their love of sailing with people with disabilities.

Sailability at RPYC began following the Gold Medal success of Noel Robins, Jamie Dunross and Graeme Martin at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games, when the  General Committee decided to develop a programme for people with disabilities to be able to participate in all manner of Club activities, from trying sailing to club racing and high performance competitions.

Today the Sailability programme offers three integrated levels of activity; Supported, Mainstream, and High Performance, to over 500 participants annually, see below for details. Group bookings, School holiday activities, and private sessions are also available by appointment.

As a Sailability WA member, if you wish to test your sailing skills and want to learn to race you can participate as crew on the Sonar keelboats in regular racing events at Royal Perth Yacht Club. We race Sonar and Soling keelboats on an even footing against able-bodied crews throughout the year as part of the regular racing schedule at RPYC. Both Sonars and Solings race with a 3 person crew and can be sailed recreationally with a crew of 5.

burgee.gif High Performance Sailing

The Sailability High Performance Unit has been well established at RPYC following our gold medal success at the 2000 paralympics in the Sonar Class (Noel Robins, Jamie Dunross and Graeme Martin). Since then members of the high performance unit have taken part in various qualifying events for the Beijing Paralypmics 2008,  one such event that took place in Western Australia was the ALCOA IFDS World Disabled Sailing Championships hosted by Royal Perth Yacht Club. Members of the High Performance Unit including Colin Harrison, Graeme Martin and Russell Boaden (in the Sonar class) and Rachael Cox (in the SKUD class), qualified at the 2007 IFDS world disabled sailing championships  http://www.2007ifdsworlds.com/ to represent Australia at the 2008 Beijing paralypmics. Great results were again acheived with five of the six Australian Paralympic sailors being members of the Sailability program.  The Sonar team skippered by Colin Harrison and crew members Graeme Martin and Russell Boaden brought back the Bronze medal and Rachael Cox (crew) in the SKUD class won a silver medal.
